In 1971, the Matador MK IV was released after 7 years of continuous improvement. In 1966, the bike got 250cc motor - thanks to better fuel delivery and a higher compression ratio, the MK IV now reached 23.5 hp. A major improvement Bultaco did on this version was electronic ignition, which made starting much easier.

This 1971 Matador MK IV is a seriously lovely example. You may never have heard of the now-defunct Spanish motorcycle manufacturer Bultaco, but this company did wonders for the off-road motorcycle.

Bultaco was founded in 1958 in Spain by Francisco Bulto. Bultaco had a reputation for competition bikes. the Bultaco factory was closed December 22, 1979 after a long strike.. the Matador for enduro, the Sherpa T for observed trials, and the Pursang for motocross. Each would be revolutionary in their own way, and it's hard to argue that.

It started out as a 200 CC dirt warrior that had lights, a horn and speedometer so it could be licensed and titled as a street bike. By the Mk3, displacement had grown to 244cc and was a very solid dirt racer with lights which had seen success with multiple gold medals in the ISDT.

Bultaco's line of Matadors were hugely popular trail and enduro bikes. Early Bultaco Matador models had aluminum fenders, such as the red and black Matador 200. The Matador MK2 models were produced between 1965-67. The beefed up MK3 250cc models were produced from 1967-1970.
